6 Tips For Curbing Your Sugar Cravings

Got sugar cravings? Me too!! Here are 6 tips and options to help curb your sugar cravings that I love using and suggesting to help my family, friends and personal training clients. I actually created an entire Youtube Video for you on it because I'm so passionate about this stuff and wanting you to have a happy, healthy relationship with food and figure what would be the best option when they come on. Click play on the 'Tips For Curbing Your Sugar Cravings' video below to check it out:

Here is a helpful guide down below:

The one thing I always like to suggest when cravings come on are to check in with yourself and your body first. Every meal directly effects the next, so if you had a small breakfast this morning that can directly impact your mid-afternoon or evening cravings throughout the day. How about if you only got 5 hours of sleep last night as opposed to your normal 7-8 hours of sleep? Your cravings may be spiked due to not allowing the proper amount of hormonal reset your body needed. So maybe it's not sugar you want but actually a nap instead in that case ūüėČ Not managing how we deal with bad stress can effect it as well. So dealing with our mindset around that stressful thought or shifting or perspective to a healthy positive one may be what we need to attack first before heading to sugar.

So check in and see what could have happened to set it off, from that point you can mindfully decide what are going to be the best options to move forward in.  Here are some options I like to suggest:

Option 1) Cocoa Powder drink- I love this drink! It actually does taste like hot cocoa and it has some amazing benefits too! Cocoa powder has tons of antioxidants, phytonutrients, has a wonderful brain chemical effect by helping to raise your dopamine, serotonin levels, helps you focus and relax as well as curb your cravings. I have had this when I've had a craving for sugar, salt, fat or carbs and it zaps it almost immediately. Great for morning, mid-afternoon or after dinner cravings.

Here is the recipe:

1 Tbsp of 100% Cocoa Powder

Hot water

1 packet stevia

1/4 cup Unsweetened Almond milk- Vanilla flavor or try the Vanilla Almond Coconut flavor (for the coconut lovers)

5-8 dashes Cinnamon

Directions: Scoop 1tbsp cocoa powder in cup, pour hot water over it and stir to prevent clumping, add almond milk, packet of stevia and cinnamon and enjoy!!

Option 2) Eat a protein bar! Quest Protein Bars are my favorite protein bars on the market! These are so tasty but again like with any food, try it first and see how your body responds. Amazing for a mid-morning, mid- afternoon snack or an after dinner dessert to curb cravings. They are filled with protein, fiber and taste great. My favorite flavors are Cinnamon roll, Cookie dough, coconut cashew, peanut butter and jelly, cookies and cream and their new fall flavor Pumpkin Pie...Oh and if you are local in Ventura County, CA you can purchase them cheapest in town at Nutriworld in Oxnard.

Option 3) Make a protein shake! Another great way to get more protein and fiber by adding some fruit and veggies to the mix. Find a protein powder that works best for you and your gut. Whey, egg white, pea, Vegan protein powder, add some ice, coconut water, spinach, berries and enjoy! Always a great sugar craving squasher.

Option 4) Eat a Piece of fruit with nut butter - Try a low sugared piece of fruit like an apple and 2tbsp of almond butter to satiate you and get a little salty, sweetness to help curb your cravings.

Option 5) Go for a 20 minute walk (I didn't mention this in the YouTube Video) to help get your mind off of it and enjoy the fresh air at the same time. By the time you're back you'll probably forget you even had a craving and just will want a glass of water.

Option 6) Indulge in the craving!! Mindfully of course by asking do I really want to eat that or not really want to eat that? As well as attaching ZERO guilt to doing it! Try 3-5 bites and see how you feel rather then having the entire thing. Sometimes all we really want is just a taste of it and we're good! So indulge and enjoy joyfully!!

Let me know which one worked best for you or if you have one you use that I didn't mention, I would love to hear it. Leave it for me on my Anacapa Fitness Facebook Page so everyone else can try it too!
